Problem

Finding a nice place to work in our new “work from home” lives can be difficult. The biggest struggles with working remotely are not being able to ‘unplug’ after work, loneliness, collaborating and distractions at home. Finding a new place outside of your home office can help keep you motivated and get out of your routine.

My Role

  • Branding

  • Design high-fidelity screens after guerilla usability tests

  • Finalize designs after usability testing and iteration.

  • Secondary research

  • Conducted initial user interviews

  • Develop user flows

  • Sketch and wireframe initial app screens

Scope and Constraints

  • Tools: Sketch, Invision, Photoshop

  • The goal of this project is to create a solution for 1) a free to subscription-based model and 2) a messaging feature for users.

Target Audience

  • Users aged 25-50

  • Owns a smartphone and uses apps regularly (3+ times a day)

  • Works fully remote, partially remote, or works remotely on occasion.

Primary Research — User Interviews

It would be great to find a new place to work! It would be nice to get out of the house maybe once or twice a week.

I’m looking for new places to work all the time! I get pretty bored working from home all the time. I definitely like getting out whenever I can.

I think it would be nice to get out of the house and in a new environment. But it would be important to know what each location has available — like WiFi, power outlets, etc.

Conclusion

The problem I am trying to solve with Nook, is the difficulty in finding an adequate location to work from (outside of your home or office). The goal of this project is to create a solution for 1) a free to subscription-based model and 2) a messaging feature for users. The first goal was accomplished by providing the ability to create a corporate or group account, where you can add teammates to your company or group’s profile, rent office spaces and charge your company, create group message threads, and share locations. This is a paid subscription service aside from the free service of looking up free and for-rent locations. The messaging feature was created as a part of the app to allow users to connect with others in the app. This allows users to coordinate a meeting place to work together, collaborate or to network. For corporate accounts, the messaging feature allows for users to create group message threads where they can share office booking information, coordinate meeting times, etc.

What I’ve learned from this project is that it’s not always easy to know what each individual person is looking for in a remote work location. Some require very minimal amenities, like just WIFI. While others require much more, like a monitor, meeting room, etc. It is difficult but very important to try to accommodate to everyone’s individual needs. The option for users to filter their searches based on the amenities they require, was a beneficial feature to solve for this issue.
